NEMC salutes media for support, cooperation

The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) said yesterday it receives great support and cooperation from Tanzanian media houses in spreading knowledge on how to conserve and protect the country’s environment.

NEMC Director General Samuel Gwamaka told a function of nature conservationists here that although NEMC was credited rightly with successes in environment public education campaigns the council would not have reached the masses without support from the media houses.

“Sustained public campaigns on environment protection for which we are rightly credited, would not have been as successful if we had not enjoyed great support and cooperation from our media houses. They are our partners in reaching the masses; we thank them very much,” he said, adding that schools and colleges had also been instrumental in spreading knowledge on environment protection.  The council uses brochures whenever necessary, he said.

He told the conservationists that because Tanzania was now a middle-income country, Tanzanians should be even more concerned with protection of the country’s environment because, he said, a bigger economy was sustained by greater industrial production.

“Let us encourage our people to be watchful and ensure their surroundings are clean and safe.  A bigger industrial economy brings with it greater responsibilities and challenges to protect environment,” the expert said.

Dr Gwamaka said environment protection had global implications hence the logic behind the annual World Environment Day, on June 5. In marking the day, he said, Tanzanians are encouraged to plant trees.
