Mbeya agro-processors get 5 acres to build 50 industries

agro-processors, especially processors of fruits and vegetables, yesterday got
a shot in the arm when Mbeya Region authorities handed over to the Tanzania Food
Processors Association of Women Entrepreneurs (TAFOPA) five acres that will
host a total of 50 micro-, small and medium industries.
The handing over ceremony was attended by Mbeya Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila and the Chairperson of the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation, Ms Angelina Ngalula. The especial industrial reserve area will be used by Kibowavi Project, as association of fruits and vegetable processors, which is supported by a Swiss organization called Helvetas.
Mr Chalamila told the function
that the region was grateful to Helvetas for setting aside one billion/- to set
up industries that would be run by women and youth growers of vegetables and
fruits to produce quality products in plants that would be set up. “We
have witnessed the usefulness of Kibowavi Project. That is why we quickly
set aside this land for entrepreneurs in order to advance our region’s economy
and that of nation.”

Ngalula, who thanked both the region and Helvetas for supporting the private
sector by paying attention to the needs of TPSF entrepreneurial members.
“This reserve area will host about 50 agro-processing industries and cold
rooms. To us this means a lot. We see liberation to our entrepreneurs coming
very fast,” she told the function, explaining that entrepreneurs would process
and package products for local and foreign markets.
The chairperson said
initiative would promote inclusive economy, advance the cause of the private
sector and create jobs. Ms Ngalula said volume of business produced by small
entrepreneurs grew every year. She said micro-, small and medium enterprises
accounted for one third of Tanzania’s GDP and offered 40 percent of jobs
countrywide.
TAFOPA Chairperson ,
Ms Suzy Lazier, thanked Mbeya Region for making the project one of its
priorities, adding that their association was serious about implementation of
the national industrialization agenda.
