YARA Tanzania’s NPK fertilizer to benefit 83,000 smallholder farmers

YARA Tanzania Limited, a subsidiary of Yara International ASA, will on Thursday launch a programme that seeks to help over 83,000 smallholder farmers in all Tanzanian regions get NPK fertilizer free of charge.
The Firm’s Managing Director, Mr Winstone Odhiambo told reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the donation has been made by YARA International ASA under its initiative known as Action Africa
Initiative.
“Approximately 12,500 metric tons of NPK fertilizer will be made available free of charge to smallholder maize farmers in the hope that the farmers will apply the fertilizer during the ongoing August-December growing season,” Mr Odhiambo said.
He said  the 16.5 bn/- initiative was intended to boost maize and rice production and supply in line with Tanzania’s food security programme.
According to him,  the initiative seeks to increase use and proper application of fertilizer in Tanzania as a whole.  Proper and timely use of fertiliser by smallholders will increase their disposable income and savings will be invested in changing their lives.
“The Minister of Agriculture, Honourable Japhet Hasunga  is expected to be the Chief Guest during  the launch and  flag-off  the initiative,” he said, noting that YARA Tanzania was always behind the growth and development of agriculture.
The donation is made in the hope that it is important to enhance food production in Tanzania and it is also important to ensure there is food security in Tanzania.
The event will be held at our YARA Terminal Facility in Dar es Salaam. The facility is located in Kurasini off Kilwa Road, behind Mvinjeni Bus Stop.
The company has been working closely with the fifth phase government and other stakeholders in transforming the sector and have a greater impact in the growth and development of sector estimated to employ 80 percent of the population.
